Mentoring programmes that hold up over years, not months.
Structured mentoring for talent pipelines across the region. The MENTEES framework, adapted for the realities of regional offices, distributed teams and multi-country mentor pools. Long-running programmes across the AXA XL group and others.
What we mean by a mentoring programme.
Mentoring is not coaching, and it is not training, and it is not a buddy scheme. It is a structured programme that pairs experienced people with developing ones, equips both sides with the skills and structure to make the relationship work, and runs the programme administration that keeps it alive when the energy of the launch starts to fade.
The MENTEES framework covers the seven things that have to be right for mentoring to deliver: matching, expectations, navigation, training, evaluation, escalation and sustainability. The framework architecture and full implementation detail sits on our sister site at nolimitspartners.com. This page is about how it has worked in practice across the region.
Janet and Martin, your work with Charlotte and our HR colleagues has created a highly valuable and comprehensive programme for mentees and mentors. This is clear through the data and the personal and career development of our participants and alumni. Thank you for your continued efforts and support, it is a fantastic programme.
What good APAC mentoring tends to need.
A few patterns from the region that have shaped our practice:
- Cross-border pairs work best when they are properly supported. The instinct to pair a regional mentee with a global HQ mentor often produces the strongest development experience, and it only works if the programme handles the time zones, communication norms and relationship rhythm. Without the wrap-around, cross-border pairs go quiet within three months.
- Cultural style differences in mentoring are real. Direct feedback in one country reads as rude in another. A good programme equips mentors to adapt, and mentees to receive the adaptation, without flattening the value of the experience.
- The data matters. Programmes that survive past year two have leaders who can see the difference the mentoring is making. We build evaluation in from the start, and we report it in language the executive sponsor can use.
